My research focuses on determining the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) and thereby achieving a greater understanding of the strong interaction. The strong interaction is responsible for binding the quarks together to form protons and neutrons.

Since 2004 I have worked on the ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider as my main research activity. Huge experiments like ALICE, which are constructed, maintained, operated, and upgraded by a single collaboration, requires the work of 2000 physicists and engineers to come together like a symphony orchestra. I have worked on several aspects of the experiment: simulations, calibrations/performance, and data analysis.

Before LHC, QGP was mainly associated with nuclear collisions (e.g., lead-lead collisions), but LHC has over the last 10 years demonstrated that even proton-proton collisions exhibit QGP-like phenomena. Whether this is really due to a "mini plasma", or some other unknown, fundamental phenomenon, is an important study to which I devote most of my research now. In this way I hope to pin down the microscopic dynamics of "free" (deconfined) quarks and gluons.
