Title: Development of the data acquisition system for the ESS beam monitors
Subject area: Physics
Description:
The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a facility at the forefront of accelerator-based research that will produce an unprecedented thermal neutron flux. To ensure the reliable operation and performance of the neutron instruments where the scientific measurements are performed, monitoring of the neutron beams is critical. In this context, the ESS Detector Group is developing a beam monitor based on the MPGD (MicroPattern Gaseous Detectors) technology (aka uRWELL) capable of achieving high detection rates with excellent spatial resolution. We are looking for a well-motivated, ambitious MSc student to participate in the development of a data-acquisition and monitoring system based on the GEMINI programmable readout interface specifically constructed for the 120-channel uRWELL beam monitor. In this project, the student will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a cutting-edge monitoring system using state-of-the-art electronics. The project will involve the adaptation of high-energy physics techniques into the realm of neutron-scattering detectors, by adapting algorithms created for tracking charged particles at the Large Hadron Collider in experiments at CERN to improve the spatial resolution of detectors at ESS.
